Parallels Settings For Mac

I was able to install Big Sur until "Remote Management" prompted me to login with my companies account to "automatically configure your computer". I probably shouldn't do that because I don't want to register multiple MacBooks with my credentials at the Remote Management service. Furthermore then it's not a clean VM anymore if it installs all that proprietary software and changes the defaults of countless settings.

I tested Visual Studio on my Macbook with parallels, things did not run as quick as I wanted. Since it was no problem for me to get a brand new good specced windows computer from my workplace, I did that. I got a Lenovo Thinkpad W540 and things are running very well. I had to give up osx of course, but better than having a slow system.

Parallels Settings For Mac

I switched to an Apple Macbook Pro three years back and has been using it ever since at work and home. Running BIM 360 Glue or Navisworks in a Windows virtual machine using Parallels has become such a breeze that I barely have to pause. It took me a while to understand the settings initially and some additional trial and error to identify what i believe to be the key parameters. I thought of sharing in this post some of these lessons learned in optimizing Parallels settings for use with BIM 360 Glue or Navisworks.

Take a back up: Before you start modifying any settings, it is recommended to take a back up copy of your virtual machine. You will find a *.pvm file within your parallels folder. Make a copy of this and save it some where safely such that you can easily roll back to your existing virtual machine state.

In addition to this, let us take a look at some of the other settings that are very important. All these setting are accessible by selecting the "Settings" of the virtual machine. There are four main tabs General, Options, Hardware and Security. We are going to focus on some key parameters within the Options and Hardware Tabs.

Hardware: I have found couple of settings within the Hardware tab to be the key for good graphics, especially when you are navigating 3D models. First is the CPU & Memory numbers. I have 16 GB of RAM on my machine and I have noticed the best performance when I dedicate 9-11GB for the virtual machine to go with 2 CPUs. There are some benchmark tests available on the web that point to this setting.

Couple of final tweaks to the Windows settings and you are all set. I typically run Windows in a 1440X900 Screen Resolution. And from the PC System Properties, I set Windows to 'Adjust for Best Performance'.

As expected, Parallels struggled, even on Low settings, while Bootcamp, on the other hand, performed great. If you have an Intel Mac, Bootcamp will definitely be your best bet. But what about Apple Silicon Macs?

Parallel cannot slow down your mac. False! Significant lag (like 1994 slow) when running Parallels. I shut down the mac and do not reopen parallels and the mac is just fine. But when I use Parallels, the mac will significantly lag and slow. I have an M1 Mac with not much installed on it , 8gb RAM and plenty of HD space.

User-initiated software updates can be carried out with a bootstrap token on Macs that are running macOS, version 11.1, and enrolled via automated device enrollment. To authorize user-initiated software updates on a device that isn't enrolled via automated device enrollment, you must restart the Mac in recovery mode and downgrade its security settings. You can also utilize the bootstrap token for software updates on Macs running macOS 11.2 and later, with the only requirement being that the device needs to be supervised.

Kernel extension management is automatically available on Macs running macOS 11 or later and enrolled via automated device enrollment. To authorize the remote management of kernel extensions on a device that isn't enrolled via automated device enrollment, you must restart the Mac in recovery mode and downgrade its security settings.

Modify the VM's configuration settings to add or change a VM serial number and hardware model identifier. Enter any string of alphanumeric characters for the serial number. For hardware model, we recommend using the model of the device that's running the VM. To find your Mac's hardware model, select the Apple menu and go to About This Mac > System Report > Model Identifier.

When asked to choose between Productivity or Games Only, you should obviously go with the latter option if you are going to be using the VM for gaming. After you select one of the two options, select Continue. On the next page, check the Customize settings before the installation option, and click Create.

Warzone 2.0 is not compatible with ARM based devices. I went ahead and purchased a Mac mini M1, purchased parallels, dled windows 11 ARM and when I went to dl warzone 2.0 for free on battle.net and/or steam, they both said warzone 2.0 was not compatible with ARM devices. Unfortunately you HAVE to dl the ARM version of window s 10/11 for the M1 platform on Mac mini. Previous warzone worked fine with this process but the new 2.0 does not. Is there a work around?

I tried the same settings with each game as before, in a resolution of 1440x900 at medium settings, and it resulted in full speed across the board. While Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes would run at 40 FPS on medium settings with the M1 Mac mini, it was full speed on high settings here.

With every game on medium settings at a 1440x900 resolution running at full speed, I decided to go for a high setting preset, with a higher resolution at 2560x1440 running the same games listed above.
