During the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s, Kunchacko made significant contributions to Malayalam cinema, both as a producer and as director of some notable movies. He started Udaya Studios in Alleppey (Alappuzha) in 1947, reducing the travel to Madras (Chennai) for film crew and actors. This boosted Malayalam film production in Kerala.[citation needed]
The 70s saw the emergence of a new wave of cinema in Malayalam. The growth of the film society movement in Kerala introduced the works of the French and Italian New Wave directors to the discerning Malayali film enthusiasts. Adoor Gopalakrishnan's first film, Swayamvaram (1972), brought Malayalam cinema to the international film arena. In 1973 M. T. Vasudevan Nair, who was by then recognised as an important author in Malayalam, directed his first film, Nirmalyam, which won the National Film Award for Best Feature Film. G. Aravindan followed Adoor's lead with his Uttarayanam in 1974. K. P. Kumaran's Adhithi (1974) was another film that was acclaimed by the critics. Cinematographers who won the National Award for their work on Malayalam films in the 1970s were Mankada Ravi Varma for Swayamvaram (1972), P. S. Nivas for Mohiniyattam (1977), and Shaji N. Karun for Thampu (1979). John Abraham, K. R. Mohanan, K. G. George, and G. S. Panikkar were products of the Pune Film Institute who made significant contributions.[citation needed]
During the late 1970s, some young artists started seeing Malayalam cinema as a medium of expression and thought of it as a tool to revitalise society. A noted director, Aravindan, was famous in Kerala as a cartoonist before he started making films. His important movies include Kanchana Sita (1977), Thampu (1978), Kummatty (1979), Chidambaram (1985), Oridathu (1986), and Vasthuhara (1990).
The period had movies with humour from directors like Priyadarshan, Sathyan Anthikad, Kamal and Siddique-Lal. Piravi (1989) by Shaji N. Karun was the first Malayalam film to win the Caméra d'Or-Mention at the Cannes Film Festival.[5]
The millennium started with a blockbuster hit Narasimham starring Mohanlal. In 2001 came the world's first film with only one actor in the cast, The Guard. Slapstick comedy was the predominant theme of the films of this era. C.I.D. Moosa (2003) by Johny Antony, Meesa Madhavan (2002) by Lal Jose and Kunjikoonan (2002) directed by Sasi Shanker are examples. Sequels to a number of successful films were made. Some movies were examples of exemplary film making, such as Meghamalhar, Madhuranombarakattu, Nandanam, Perumazhakkalam, and Kaazhcha. In 2008, Malayalam movie artists came together in the multistar film Twenty:20 to raise funds for the AMMA.[29]

Adoor Gopalakrishnan (born 3 July 1941) is an Indian film director, script writer, and producer and is regarded as one of the most notable and renowned filmmakers in India. With the release of his first feature film Swayamvaram (1972), Gopalakrishnan pioneered the new wave in Malayalam cinema during the 1970s.[2] In a career spanning over five decades, Gopalakrishnan has made only 12 feature films to date. His films are made in the Malayalam language and often depict the society and culture of his native state Kerala. Nearly all of his films premiered at Venice, Cannes and Toronto International Film Festival. Along with Satyajit Ray and Mrinal Sen, Gopalakrishnan is one of the most recognized Indian film directors in world cinema.[3][4]
After securing a degree in Economics, Political Science and Public Administration in 1961 from the Gandhigram Rural Institute,[7] he worked as a Government officer near Dindigul in Tamil Nadu. In 1962, he left his job to study screenwriting and direction from the Film and Television Institute of India Pune. He completed his course from there with a scholarship from the Government of India. With his classmates and friends, Gopalakrishnan established Chithralekha Film Society and Chalachithra Sahakarana Sangham; the organization was the first film society in Kerala and it aimed at production, distribution and exhibition of films in the co-operative sector.
Cinema being an inclusive space for women and minorities has always been a controversial and debatable topic. Even in 2019, we still see talents from gender, caste, religious and ethnic minorities finding it hard to establish themselves. But then, 89 years ago, in pre-independent India, a young Dalit woman was brave enough to dress up as an upper-caste woman and act in a film called Vigathakumaran. Now, this sparked a lot of obvious controversies. This was the first time that the people of Kerala saw a woman play a woman's role in a film. For most conservatives, this was unacceptable. On top of this, this was an untouchable lower caste woman who acted as an upper-caste Nair. The result? The actor P K Rosy and her family were harassed verbally and physically by an angry mob. Rosy fled her hometown and lived in a village in Tamil Nadu under a false identity. Her misfortune did not even let her see her own face on the big screen. The new generation of women filmmakers and actors are knowingly or unknowingly indebted to Rosy. So, they thought of paying their tribute to her or rather apologizing to her, for the sins of the past. The Malayalam cinema's Women in Cinema Collective recently kickstarted an initiative called P K Rosy Film Society, with an aim to study cinema more academically and view it with a more aesthetic outlook."We wanted a space to study cinema academically. The talks for the same has been going on for a year. Now that we got a more conceptual clarity we formed this society," says filmmaker Archana Padmini, who is a member of the WCC. "Undoubtedly, P K Rosy is the mother of Malayalam cinema. Naming this society after her, is rather our apology to her, more than a tribute. This is a space where people could engage in cinema and related discussions irrespective of religion, caste or any other bias," she says.Realising the need to conduct activities consistently to get the society up and running, Archana says that their main agenda is to organise film screenings every month. "We're also looking for more activities. Talks are going on about conducting film appreciation workshops and film writing workshops. Also, we want to conduct activities that define the film industry and organise technical workshops," she says."Thankfully, the response towards this society from the people have been very positive," says actor Sajitha Madathil, another WCC member. "Since WCC was started by the women in cinema, no one would take the initiative to begin a society like this, except us," she adds.Sajitha also tells us that while setting up the society, the members got to know that Rosy's daughter is still alive. "Unfortunately, we could not meet her," she says. Elaborating more on the society's purpose, she says, "The viewing culture must change through films. Women's cinema must be celebrated. We want to bring out feminist politics in cinema and create positive changes in films."

Once registered, the children found it incredibly easy to use the site. Within 15 minutes, they had rated and reviewed lots of different films. They had also added a number of movies to their 'Wishlist'. As the club leader, it is really easy for me to look at the children's reviews. All of the wishlist results are also collated so that I can see (and then order) the most popular films. Ordering is simply a case of pressing the 'order' button next to each film. These are then posted to us. We are allowed to keep three DVDs at a time and we simply put them back in the post when we have finished with them.
